The BLS released JOLTS data for January yesterday (here’s the BLS press release), so it’s time for a quick update on job openings. Total nonfarm job openings for January were down 97,000 from a year earlier, but as the BLS notes here in Table 7, that is not a statistically significant change.
Comparing the distribution of job openings by industry for January 2017 to January 2016 we can that very little changed at the industry level as well, with over half of job openings accounted for by professional and business services, health care and social assistance, and leisure and hospitality in both periods. The only significant changes in industry level job opening are the ones noted as statistically significant by the BLS (see the Table 7 link above):
- Government: from 8.4% in January 2016 to 7.7% in January 2017
- Real estate and rental and leasing: from 1.2% to 2.8%
- Educational services: from 1.9% to 1.5%
